Sweeper Driver

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a dependable and safety-conscious individual with practical experience of using mechanical plant, equipment and vehicles. You will need a valid C1 driving licence (or equivalent) and the ability to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, with previous experience of driving a mechanical road sweeper or left-hand-drive vehicle being advantageous. Experience in grounds maintenance or public realm cleansing would also be beneficial.

You will be comfortable working independently with minimal supervision, while also contributing positively as part of a wider team. Accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to work to scheduled deadlines are essential, as is the confidence to deal with members of the public professionally, including challenging situations. A flexible approach is important, as the role may require overtime and support when vehicles are being serviced or unavailable.

Key responsibilities:

• Drive a mechanical road sweeper throughout East Devon, sweeping road channels in accordance with scheduled programmes
• Operate mechanical plant, equipment and vehicles safely and effectively in line with client’s standards
• Carry out basic maintenance of the mechanical sweeper, including cleaning, checking oil and water, lubrication and other scheduled tasks
• Use blowers and other equipment to clear grit, debris and litter from paths, gutters and areas inaccessible to the sweeper
• Collect and remove litter and debris from public areas when required
• Sweep footpaths, channels and other public areas as necessary
• Assist with cleaning public lavatories and other public buildings when required
• Support beach cleansing and litter removal activities
• Assist with grounds maintenance duties, including grass cutting, strimming, hedge pruning, planting, weeding and watering
• Maintain high standards of health and safety and contribute to effective risk management
• Provide a professional, customer-focused service and communicate appropriately with members of the public and colleagues
• Work flexibly to support operations during periods of vehicle servicing, breakdowns or increased demand
