Humans vs Robots – a Take on Artificial Intelligence in Recruitment

Artificial Intelligence. Possibly the most discussed and controversial topic in technology this century. Is it only a matter of time before the robot’s takeover? Are the office dinosaurs who refuse to adopt Artificial Intelligence destined to be left behind? Will we all be cyborgs by the year 2047?! No idea…

What we do know, however, is that Artificial Intelligence is possibly the biggest factor in transforming the relationship between people and technology, which is particularly impactful in the wonderful world of recruitment.

The OriginsOrigins of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence has been around since the 1950s and has slowly been creeping into our lives ever since. Much like a chilling prologue in an 80s sci-fi movie, it is now firmly in the mainstream after seeing a boom in 2023 with apps like Chat GBT and Copilot being adopted by companies on mass.

Within the recruitment industry, Artificial Intelligence is often used to gather data insights and automate time-consuming, repetitive tasks throughout the hiring process. It has the potential to simplify the sourcing process by identifying candidates that are the “best fit” for a role through job-matching software, screening candidates by scoring and ranking them based on defined criteria as well as scheduling interviews using chatbots.

With this handy tool at your side, you can streamline your admin duties during the early stages of the hiring process… but only if you ignore the drawbacks (which we will not). Artificial Intelligence is a learning machine, meaning it’s only as accurate as the data it is fed. If the data is somewhat inaccurate, it will, no doubt, affect the performance.

Recruitment, is not just about data, however. It’s about people. It always has been.

Artificial intelligence lacks the capability to understand human nuances and how we truly interact with each other. Of course, it would be spectacular if a new software could sort out all internal processes and populate candidate pipelines, but that’s not the reality. At the end of the day, people buy from people.

A Final Thought

If you are looking to fill vacancies and build real and meaningful relationships, you will always need multi-skilled recruiters. Whilst AI has its place in recruitment, it should be treated as an enhancement, not a replacement.

Leave it to the humans on this occasion robots!
